Mileage to Jordan Hot Springs via the Casa Vieja Trail:
The trailhead for Casa Vieja is located at an elevation of 8,960 feet. The trek to Jordan Hot Springs is approximately 5.2 miles one way, making it a10.4-mile round trip. Keep in mind that this distance can be adjusted depending on where you decide to camp. The trail to the hot springs starts out at the Blackrock Trailhead which is way past Kennedy Meadows at the end of Forest Service Road 21so3. This trail does require a permit for overnight stays.
Trail Difficulty:
The Casa Vieja Trail is considered moderately challenging. The route is considered moderately challenging because it’s a pretty steep downhill trek on the way in and a punishing uphill hike on the way out. The trail is well-maintained, but it does require some navigation skills in certain areas, particularly when crossing streams or fallen trees. There are plenty of beautiful spots along the way to stop and take a rest if you need.
Camping Options:
There are several camping options available along the trail. Around the 5-mile mark, there is a lovely meadow with ample space for setting up camp. This location provides a picturesque view of the surrounding mountains and serves as a great basecamp for exploring the area. Additionally, near Jordan Hot Springs, there are a few established campsites with fire rings, which offer close proximity to the hot springs. The campsites are spaced a reasonable distance apart and on my two visits to these hot springs, I have only seen a handful of other visitors.
Camping in this area allows you to immerse yourself in nature’s beauty. The peacefulness of the meadow campsite provides a serene atmosphere for relaxation. As you set up camp. remember to secure your food and belongings, as the area is known for bear activity. Also, keep in mind that campfires may be restricted during certain times of the year due to fire danger, so check local regulations before starting any fires. Wildlife:
The Casa Vieja Trail is home to a diverse range of wildlife. While hiking, you may encounter mule deer, elk, and occasionally black bears. It’s important to practice proper wildlife etiquette and secure your food to prevent any unwanted encounters.
